My HB Watts gets heavy usage (4-5 times a week). The paper cover is getting
worn but the corners aren't frayed and the hinge is fine--and I bought it
hot off the press when it came out. My HB Morlet (DENF), on the other hand,
had its corners all bent and the hinge broken within a year of heavy usage.

My hardbound had the rear hinge splitting after 18 months. The corners are
frayed. For a book that expensive a few dollars more on a proper binding
would have prevented this. My Place-Names of Roman Britain cost the same
when new (inflation-adjusted) and shows no problems. Ditto for my 1928
English River-Names. A soft bound 8x10 that size only costs about seven
dollars to print and bind in quantities of 5000, but is really pushing the
edge of what is intended for that type binding.
