CAREER DEVELOPMENT SYMPOSIUM FOR EARLY CAREER ACADEMICS
Date: 10.30 – 16.00, 3 December 2010
Venue: The Lowther Room, Royal Geographical Society, Kensington Gore, London SW7
This symposium aims to gather experiences of early career geographers at the present moment, exchange strategies and advice with those at a variety of career stages, and help participants build skills and knowledge in order to secure a long term career. The difficulties and challenges of the years following a PhD are being exacerbated by the current funding crisis in the UK Higher Education Sector with many post-doctoral academics holding a series of temporary posts, multiple part-time posts, continuing with academic work in an unpaid capacity or having to leave the academy in order to make a living. This may make combining academic work with home life and caring responsibilities particularly difficult. In this context, the symposium seeks to provide a supportive space for all early career academics in geography and related disciplines. The day will include reflections on career trajectories from those working in a variety of contexts and having taken different routes, as well as skills based sessions on topicsincluding applying for jobs, navigating career paths and academic writing. It is aimed particularly at those in the final stages of a PhD or at an early career stage post PhD.
Speakers will include Dr Beth Greenhough (Queen Mary), Professor Pauline Kneale (University of Southampton) Dr Avril Maddrell (University of West of England), Dr Jessica Pykett (Aberystwyth University), Dr Parvati Raghuram (Open University)
Attendance is free, but places are limited.
