Dear all
Since we're talking films, they may want to see 'XXY' - an excellent recent Argentinian production that deals directly with this question

Hi Jon and others,
When I was starting out as a PhD student I found Lauria and Knopp's paper a great way into thinking about gay identity and space: Lauria, Mickey and Lawrence Knopp 1985. “Toward an Analysis of the Role of Gay Communities in the Urban Rennaisance Urban Geography 6(2): 152-169.
Also, check out Rob Kitchin's work on the gay community in Belfast.
To add to Martin's list of films, 'Breakfast on Pluto' might be a nice way to get thinking about gay/transvestite identity in a 1970s, rural context.
Good luck!
John.
Kind Regards,
John Watters

Dear Jon and to whom it may concern,
Next to Kath's suggestions, the following sources, although not 'geographical' as such, could serve as a good starting point for getting going with transgender geographies:
Books:
- ‘Transvestites and transsexuals: toward a theory of cross-gender behavior’ (1988) by Docter
- ‘Lesbian and gay studies. An introductory, interdisciplinary approach’ (2000) by Sandfort et al.
- ‘In a queer time and place: transgender bodies, subcultural lives’ (2005) by Halberstam
Films and documentaries, a selection from a plethora of sources:
- So-called sexploitation and transgressive films by John Waters (e.g. ‘Pink Flamingos’*, 1972) and Doris Wishman (e.g. ‘Let Me Die a Woman’, 1977)
*starring Divine/Harris Glenn Milstead, see also 'her' popular songs like ‘I'm so beautiful’ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kwh_yOzJ6AY)
- ‘Ich bin meine eigene Frau’ (1992) and ‘Der Einstein des Sex’ (1999) by Rosa von Praunheim
- ‘Satree lek’ (2000) by Yongyoot Thongkongtoon
- ‘The adventure of Iron Pussy’ (2003) by Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Michael Shaowanasai
- ‘Him to her’ & ‘Her to him’ (2002), broadcasted by Discovery Health Channel
Best,
Martin

Dear Critters
I have an undergraduate student who wants to follow up on some of the quite basic work I do with my students on the geographies of gender and sexuality by thinking about the geographies of transsexuals and genderqueers.
But I didn't know where to steer them in terms of reading. Can anyone suggest any good references they could start to look at?
many thanks
Jon
