Dear Colleagues,
I would like to ask for your suggestions for possible books that you are
familiar with that might serve as textbooks for a new course,
/Alternative urbanisms, theory and practice/, I am designing for a
restructured Master in Planning programme.
The aims of the course are that learners on completion will be able to:
(1) Understand what we mean by theory; (2) Move beyond consumption to
processing of theory by engaging critically with theoretical approaches
in urbanism; (3) Recall a range of alternative theories of urbanism; (4)
Understand that planning practices follow from certain urban-theoretical
positions;(5) Discuss links between these alternative theories and
concrete implications for three-way interaction between urban
theories-planning practice-urban form; (6) Make informed and justified
choices for the theoretical foundations of their master theses.
Ellin's (1999) /Postmodern Urbanism/ was the text that immediately
sprang to mind, but I would very much welcome your suggestions for
similar and more recent titles that might also prove useful.
Many thanks in advance and very best wishes,
Justin Beaumont
