Call for Papers (12 November 2010):
?Novelistic Maps and Conceptual Trajectories in Twentieth-Century Fiction?
This panel suggests looking at novels not only as world-making devices, but
also ? and more importantly, perhaps ? as propositions for their readers to
follow and construct an itinerary in the making.
Hybrid novels of literary Modernism for instance, such as Rilke?s *The
Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge* and Woolf?s *Mrs Dalloway*, can be read
as mapped-out cities; literary spaces in which the circulation of the main
characters in the diegesis is reflected in the structure of the novel
itself. Similarly, these ambulatory texts not only require their readers to
decipher the walking patterns of the protagonists, they also demand that
their readers themselves perambulate attentively and agilely within the
bounds of the literary work.
Many twentieth-century novels also encourage readerly exploration of
conceptual territories, which the author more or less explicitly
?sign-posts? in the text. Joyce?s *Ulysses* presents Stephen?s metaphysical
musings for the reader?s active consideration, just as Pérec constructs a
philosophical edifice inhabited by a cast of 1467 characters in his *Life A
User?s Book*.
Starting from an understanding of fiction?s power to create life-like worlds
that mirror to various extents those recognizable by their readers, we will
investigate the twentieth-century novel?s predilection for architecting
spaces of openness that elicit unpredictable readings and welcome a variety
of interpretative trajectories.
We encourage submissions that consider the narrative shaping of the
stumbling or unimpeded stroll of a readerly subjectivity, the literary
orchestration of walking patterns and their choreographic staging in the
urban setting, or the novelistic topography of conceptual depths.
