Hello Everyone,
I am working with Professor Pam King of Bristol University as the researcher and cataloguer on an international project, operating under the auspices of the World Universities Network (WUN), to track down and record archival materials relating to modern (post 1900) productions of medieval English religious drama.
http://www.wun.ac.uk/research/2mp
The project is based at the University of Bristol Theatre Collection, and has secured modest funding to form a collection-level catalogue from which scholars and theatre practitioners can find information about what materials exist and where they are located.
The kind of performance/production in which we are interested would preclude community Nativity plays and Easter Pageants – though not if several plays taken from one or other of the Mystery Cycles were involved.
There are no limitations as to the type of material held, or whether it is accessible to the general public. However, at this stage of the project, our principal interest is in locating material from 1900 up to the 1968 UK Theatres Act.
Geographically, the project covers productions in the UK, Canada, USA, Australasia and South Africa.
We have already been in contact with many of the University repositories and a handful of City and County records offices and archives. Where we could really use your help is…..everywhere else! Outside of the UK in particular. Privately held collections, local archives, church theatre groups – it’s a long list.
Please feel free to contact me with any further questions.
Many thanks for any assistance or advice.
