Posted on behalf of Jeannette Strickland, Head of Art, Archives & Records Management, Unilever plc
It is with great sadness that I report the death of Tony Cole who passed away on Monday aged 79. I had the pleasure of working with Tony for many years in Unilever where he helped set up the archive and was responsible for rescuing a number of collections from oblivion. One of my abiding memories of Tony will always be his tendency to put his mountain climbing skills to the test when visiting our old archive repository in Port Sunlight, where he would scale the tall shelving like a mountain goat, contrary to all health and safety recommendations!
Tony trained in Africa and worked in both central government and business archives there, as well as at ICI in the UK and he was a stalwart of the BAC for many years. He was always passionate about this work, unfailingly courteous, and supportive of those working with him. I, and many others, have lost a good friend and the profession has lost a true gentleman.
The funeral will take place at Basingstoke crematorium on Monday 18 October at 2pm.
