Dear all,
For anyone interested, just a quick update on the Society of New Archivists.
Again thanks to all of those who have been joining - the number of members is currently 164 and still growing. If anyone is interested in joining then please do so and please spread the word.
We're still undertaking a survey on our members in the hope of building a picture of the situation faced by new archivists. Of those who have responded so far (53 members), the majority (almost two thirds) are either studying on an archive course or are gaining experience prior to applying for a place on a course - which suggests, if ever there was any doubt, that interest in the profession is still strong. Of those respondants who are qualified roughly 45% are unemployed (although this is only representative of a small sample).
We hope that - assuming we can achieve a broader range of responses - we can provide a fairly accurate picture of the situation currently experienced by new archivists in Britain. If any members who have so far not replied are reading this post then we would be grateful for your responses (see Facebook group posts for more details).
Lastly, we're hoping to have the Society of New Archivists website up by the 15th October. As mentioned in a previous post, the main purpose of this is to host articles and opinion pieces on issues relevant to new archivists or on issues relating to the wider profession that it's felt aren't addressed adequately elsewhere. We've received a number of interesting articles so far. If anyone would like to contribute a piece please email to [log in to unmask] There is no restriction on length, style or media.
Many thanks for your support,
John
