Dear Colleagues
It is with regret that I inform you of Hilary Haigh’s retirement on 16 October. Hilary has been supporting the University Archives for nearly 20 years in various capacities, and was the first person to be appointed to the permanent position of University Archivist when it was created in July 1995. Hilary has a formidable knowledge of local history and, although she only works part time, the range and richness of the archives and special collections have increased substantially during her tenure. She has also contributed to a number of research projects over the years and has worked with many colleagues across the University.
There is some good news:
1. Hilary will continue in a consultancy capacity for 5 months. We are not, therefore, losing her completely.
2. Following some internal re-engineering within CLS, I am delighted to announce that Sarah Wickham’s role will be extended to incorporate both records management and archives and special collections. Sarah is professionally qualified and experienced in both these areas, and I know she will continue Hilary’s marvellous work with the archives.
Hilary has insisted on no fuss on her retirement. However, in a few months time we will have an event to launch the publication of her new book on Yorkshire Slavery and we will use that opportunity to say goodbye properly.
Best wishes
Sue
