Dear Helen
We do allow discretion and for UG programmes we have just agreed a Senate policy that discretion at the 2:1/1st boundary and 2:2/2:1 boundary only be exercised where a student's overall percentage mark is within 2% of the boundary. For other boundaries it is 1%. We have a clear rule that discretion to lower a classification is not permitted. Discretion decisions are usually based on student achievement across a profile of modules, particularly compulsory modules, with a given number of marks in the higher classification.
Best wishes
Wendy

Subject: Classifications (Discretion)
Dear All
I am currently undertaking a review of the regulations for classifying awards at Edge Hill University.
I am particularly interested in measuring the extent to which discretion is applied at other institutions and would appreciate it if you could share practice in relation to:
1) Do you allow any discretion when determining classifications?
2) If so, what are your boundaries?
Many thanks
Helen
