Dear all,
To those of you who haven't seen it yet, Science did a report on the ISBA
conference recently.
Also below it are a few articles that may be of interest.

A few articles I did from ISBA may interest your crowd.

Archaeologists See Big Promise In Going Molecular*John Travis *

Last month's International Symposium on Biomolecular Archaeology—a biennial
meeting devoted to studies of isotopes and DNA in ancient biological
materials—revealed that ancient DNA research is poised to undergo a new kind
of growth spurt. Flooded with data from next-generation sequencing
technologies, researchers are now exploring a host of new applications and
addressing an ever-wider circle of questions about ancient ecologies, human
behavior, and lifestyle. They're probing ancient medical practices by
extracting DNA from Roman herbs, for example. Some are moving beyond
isotopes and DNA to probe new classes of ancient molecules, using ancient
RNA to study gene activity and identifying ancient species with bits of
collagen from fossil bones.

In Search of Sitting Bull
John Travis
*Science* 8 October 2010: 172-173.
Can DNA help Sitting Bull's great-grandson prove his heritage and find the
warrior's remains—while giving science a rare glimpse of an early Native
American's genes? Summary

Interview:
Ernie LaPointe
Honoring His Ancestor by Studying His DNA John Travis
*Science* 8 October 2010: 172.
Ernie LaPointe, great-grandson of famed Lakota warrior Sitting Bull, has
entered into an unusual partnership with geneticist Eske Willerslev to
analyze DNA from a lock of Sitting Bull's hair. LaPointe spoke with *Science
* recently; this conversation has been edited for brevity and clarity. Summary
