Research Fellow in Applied Statistics / Epidemiology
Centre for Health and Environmental Statistics, University of Plymouth
Ref: A1921
Salary £30747 to £35646 pa – Grade 7
We have a vacancy for a statistician to play a leading role in a project investigating methods for assessing intervention effectiveness using observational databases. The post is funded by a grant from the Methodology Research Programme of the Medical Research Council and the National Institute for Health Research.
In many situations where it is not ethical or practical to perform randomised controlled trials, observational studies provide a rich source of information for assessing effectiveness of treatment interventions. Unfortunately, the modest effects of modern medical treatments can be obscured by the confounding effects of other, often unmeasured, factors. The aim of this project is to broaden the scope of existing quasi-experimental approaches to controlling residual confounding. This will include addressing the analysis of ordinal and interval outcomes, both central to research on chronic health conditions in mid and later life. The methods will be applied to data from research-oriented observational studies and to routinely gathered electronic data from GP records.
You will have a PhD in a relevant discipline with a substantial statistics component, or equivalent research experience. You will work as part of an interdisciplinary team, and will require strong verbal and written communication skills. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of modern epidemiological methods and excellent programming skills in R.
Recruitment and selection will be based on individual merit, however, we would particularly like to encourage applications from women and black and minority ethnic individuals who are currently under-represented in the Faculty of Science and Technology.
This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week on a fixed term basis for 3 years.
