PhD studentship (full time 3 years) “Use and Validation of Surrogate Outcomes in Health Technology Assessment (HTA)” Ref: PCMD/GS0031
This Studentship is based at Exeter.
The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry with its parent Institutions, the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, are seeking to attract PhD candidates of outstanding ability to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally rated research.
As part of our new developments and our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates, 2:1 or above, for a PhD studentship. International students must also have IELTS [International English Language Testing System] score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).
There is a long tradition of the use of surrogate outcomes (typically biochemical markers, physiological parameters, or subclinical end points) in clinical trials used for licensing. Surrogates often allow more rapid accrual of data on an outcome, and may be easier to measure, thereby shortening the duration and reducing the expense of clinical trials. Surrogate outcomes are, however, associated with many problems. The main one arises when the treatment causes a “positive” response on the surrogate but has no effect, or a harmful effect, on the clinical outcome, or vice versa. There has therefore been an increasing discussion on the appropriate use of surrogates in health technology assessment (HTA) and reimbursement of new and emerging healthcare interventions. To date there has been little empirical research on the appropriate use of surrogates in HTA. This studentship will follow up the recent research work on the use and validation of surrogate outcomes in HTA by the Peninsula Technology Assessment Group (PenTAG).
Closing date for application: Monday 8th November 2010 Start date: Monday 3rd January 2011
