Project description

The Met Office generates large amounts of information, both probabilistic and deterministic in nature. A key challenge is how best to disseminate this to our customers whether they be the General Public, Government or Commercial.
The successful candidate will work in the Ensemble Forecasting Applications team that forms part of Weather Science Programme. However, the role will require a significant amount of interaction with other programmes such as the Web Content & Analytics group, Communications and Technical & Information Services. The outcomes of the study would be of relevance to all Met Office business areas (see http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/services).
There will also be the opportunity to work with experts from the behavioural research consultancy Bunnyfoot (http://www.bunnyfoot.com) and Prof David Spiegelhalter (http://understandinguncertainty.org)
Activities will include:
- reviewing existing ways of representing probabilistic information (both from within the meteorological field and elsewhere);
- developing online surveys to ascertain user preferences for specific designs;
- associating preferred designs with different demographics;
- in collaboration with technical specialists, recommending the type of monitoring required through the implementation of web analytics;
- analysing the outputs of the user feedback, both survey & analytics;
- providing clear recommendations regarding which designs work best with customers from different demographic profiles.

- A current PhD student enrolled in a UK university preferably in the second or further year.
- Be prepared to be based at the company during the project for at least 3 days a week.
- Have an interest and expertise in the area of the internship.
The following conditions apply for an internship project:
- A student receives a stipend of up to 1,500 pounds per month during the project. All travel or relocation expenses are paid for separately by the company.
- A student still has the same time to complete PhD studies as funding for the internship is provided separately from PhD funding and the duration of the PhD is extended without affecting completion rates.
- The Intern remains a student at the University; he/she will not be an employee of the company during the Internship but will be based at the company's premises.
