Subject: Re: Shared cycle ways/Pedestrian routes and application of
'Inclusive Mobility' DFT 2002
Going back to the design of the shared use footway cycle track. IM is
only guidance and is ideally used for design of completely new schemes
and as desired best practice when retro fitting onto the existing
highway network.
A key question should be is there a need for off road provision. if so
then the designers should try to provide the best solution. Cycling by
Design guidance recommends and minimum of 2.0m which should cope with
cycle/pedestrain flows of up to 200 per hour. From the description it
looks like there needs to be great expense and environmental cost just
to widen the provision by 0.55m from 2.5 to 3.05; Is this a reasonable
expectation?
