The 25th CONFERENCE OF THE NORDIC SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION is due to
take place at the University of Oslo, August 4 - 7, 2011. The overall
theme for the conference is power and participation. Please note that
there will be a working group on religion. The deadline for
paper-abstract submission is February 1, 2011.
Working group for religion announcement:
Religion has become more visible and contested during the past decades.
Due mainly to increased religious diversity a new dynamic has entered
public and academic debates on religion in Western societies. Some
scholars claim that religion plays a new significant role in the public
sphere, while others argue that religion does not have any real effects
on politics and public decisions. In addition, the question is what kind
of religion is on the rise. On the one hand, there is evidence of
so-called fundamentalisms in the established faiths - Christian, Jewish,
Muslim, and Hindu. On the other hand, there is growth in New Age style
spirituality that draws from these faiths but produces a new and
different result. How should these changes be interpreted? Can they be
described in terms of secularization or sacralization?
