This isn't the private sector, but there is the case of Pal v General Medical Council, Catherine Green, Peter Lynn and Sarah Bedwell. You can locate a copy if you Google for "data protection pal judgement".
Best wishes
Susan Graham.

Subject: Examples of retention periods and business risk
Dear all
I am currently writing a paper to present to senior managers which emphasies the importance of our review and disposal procedures.
While we are all familiar with the Enron/Sarbanes Oxley scandals I am keen to find other real world examples from the UK private sector where a business has been placed at unnecessary risk by keeping their records longer than needed.
If anyone can suggest possible sources for such examples or have any they are willing to share I would be be most grateful.
Many thanks
Ruth
