I think this issue of what we can offer students of Modern Languages purely
in utilitarian terms is (unfortunately) going to be central to our
survival in future. It seems to me that we are going to have to emphasize
that Modern Language graduates (and German in particular) come out very
highly in terms of employability and that the Year Abroad is a specific
valuable experience which will stand them in good stead when competing
