If a student has been given an award but then appeals against the
classification or a mark which affects a classification then the appeal
is dealt with in whatever timescale is necessary but meanwhile the
student has the award and can go to a ceremony. One advantage is that
the appeal does not have to be rushed but can be dealt with thoroughly.
We have always done this, so I do not know if it affects numbers of
appeals. We certainly get a lot!

Subject: Question on Appeals
Dear Assessment Practitioner Group member
At the University of Leeds we are evaluating a number of processes in
the area of appeals.
In particular we are interested in Universities that confer awards while
the case is still in progress.
If you do, can you tell us:
When did you introduce this policy?
Was there a significant increase in the number of appeals lodged?
What do you consider to be the benefits and drawbacks of such a policy?
Many thanks for your help.
Carol
