A Centre for Longitudinal Studies and HALCyon workshop
Narrative and mixed methods research: a biographical approach to understanding healthy ageing
Wednesday 3 November, 2010 9:30am - 4:30pm
Institute of Education, University of London
There are many different approaches to mixed methods research. This practical workshop will focus on the use of narrative in both qualitative research and in quantitative longitudinal research and on the benefits and challenges of using narrative as a framework for the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data.
During the workshop participants will be introduced to a recent qualitative study on ageing and wellbeing that involved biographical interviews with members of three cohort studies. There will be an opportunity for group analysis and discussion as well as some hands-on experience of using NVivo as a tool to help combine analysis of qualitative and quantitative data. This workshop is provided as part of the Healthy Ageing across the Life Course programme of research, led by Professor Diana Kuh, and funded under the New Dynamics of Aging Programme.
Objectives:
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
* be familiar with definitions of narrative and narrative structures
* understand the research design of the British Birth Cohort studies and their narrative elements
* gain experience of analysis of qualitative biographical interview material in a group setting understand the features of NVivo that allow for analysis of qualitative and quantitative data
Topics:
Content includes:
* an overview of different approaches to mixed methods research
* an introduction to the use of narrative in social research
* an overview of the content and design of the 1958 British Birth cohort study, the 1946 cohort study and the Hertfordshire Cohort study
* an introduction to the features of NVivo that facilitate analysis of qualitative and quantitative data
* hands-on experience of using NVivo to conduct some mixed methods analysis
Who is the workshop aimed at?
Researchers and post graduate students with some existing experience of qualitative and quantitative research and with a basic understanding of NVivo.
The substantive focus of this workshop will be on health and well-being, however it will be of interest to all those who want to learn more about the principles of narrative analysis and longitudinal research.
