History Heritage & Urban Regeneration
14th October 2010
A One-day Conference at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea. 9.30am - 5.30pm
The day will explore how history and heritage, particularly of our
industrial past, can help inform creative and sustainable
regeneration.
The day will also launch a new project, funded by the ESRC, on the
'Local and Global Worlds of Welsh Copper' at Swansea University, which
will explore the globalised industry of copper (stretching as far as
southern Australia and Latin America) in the past, and what it can
bring to regeneration today.
It promises to be an extremely stimulating day, with much of relevance
to heritage, museum and educational professionals, historians,
archaeologists, geographers and other academics, as well as civil
servants, politicians and campaigners.
Please circulate far and wide. Details of booking can be found through
the links below or via http://www.iwa.org.uk/en/events/view/100.
Please email me off-list if you want a PDF flyer to circulate.
With all my best wishes,
Tehmina Goskar

In association with ESRC (Economic & Social Research Council),
National Waterfront Museum Swansea and Swansea University
9.30am – 5.30pm, National Waterfront Museum, Swansea
IWA Swansea Bay Branch Conference
2010 is a landmark year in the history of industrialisation and
regeneration in Swansea. It marks the 200th anniversary of the
founding of the internationally significant Hafod copperwork. It also
marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Lower Swansea
Valley project that promoted the dramatic transformation of the
largest derelict industrial landscape in Europe
Framed by the long-term development of ‘Copperopolis’, this conference
examines the past, present, and future of regeneration strategies in
Swansea. More broadly, it explores the relationship between heritage
and regeneration, with a view to identifying best practice and the key
innovations that have informed the development of cutting-edge
projects in other parts of the UK.
The conference will launch Swansea University’s ESRC-funded project,
‘History, heritage, and urban regeneration: the local and global
worlds of Welsh Copper’.
Conference tickets are:
£40 for IWA members
