Assistant Professor of Islam at the University of Richmond
The University of Richmond invites applications for a tenure-track
position in Islam as an assistant professor in the Religion Department
to begin in fall 2011. A joint appointment in an allied program or
department is possible. The successful candidate will be expected to
develop an undergraduate curriculum in the texts, cultures, and
traditions of Islam, with a preferred, but not required, focus on the
geographic area of the Middle East and/or North Africa. Applicants
should be conversant in theoretical approaches to the study of
religion, interested in interdisciplinary teaching, and willing to
contribute to the Middle East Concentration in International Studies.
The 3-2 teaching responsibilities will be divided between the Religion
department and courses in allied programs or departments.
Candidates should demonstrate strong evidence of scholarly potential.
Teaching experience preferred, but not required. Applicants must be on
track to receive their Ph.D. by August 2011 and must meet all position
requirements at the time of selection.

Assistant Professor of Islam at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
The University of Tennessee, Department of Religious Studies, invites
applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Islam to begin
August 2011. The position requires teaching a 2-2 course load. PhD in
a relevant field and teaching experience are preferred, but ABDs in a
relevant field in the final stages of completing their dissertations
will be considered. Preferred applicant will have knowledge of Arabic
and other languages relevant to their research in Islam. Area of
expertise is open to any historical period and geographic location.
Possible areas of specialization include but are not limited to:
textual and historical studies in Classical Islam; the spread and
acculturation of Islam; issues of nationalism, ethnicity, and gender;
the emergence of new forms of Islam. The Knoxville campus of the
University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to
contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals
of the university. Salary will be competitive.
