JAPAN ADVANCED INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (JAIST)
Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) is the first independent
national graduate university in Japan founded in October 1990 to carry out research and
education in advanced science and technology. JAIST seeks an assistant professor of the
field of system knowledge in SCHOOL OF KNOWLEDGE SCIENCE.
SCHOOL OF KNOWLEDGE SCIENCE aims to rearrange and integrate existing
disciplines in natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and
humanities, and to educate pioneers of the knowledge society in the
21st century through interdisciplinary education.
The appointee is expected to start her/his academic and educational
activities in JAIST in April, 2011.
Candidates have to be highly competent in conducting research and education in the
area of institutional design under the concept of complex systems, especially with
combining a synthetic method such as computer simulation and analytic methods such
as social survey and interview.
1. Position Title and School:
Assistant Professor in the field of system knowledge in School of Knowledge Science
2. Mission:
A primary mission of this position is to promote international research and education in
the field of knowledge science based on institutional design under the concept of
complex systems.
3. Qualifications:
Applicants have to hold a Ph.D. degree by the time of employment and be capable of
taking domestic and international research initiatives. The search committee may ask
candidates to orally present research activities and a research plan in Japanese or
English.
4. Term of Employment: Five (5) years (renewable)
5. Selection:
The search committee shall evaluate the candidates’ expertise, research activities, and
teaching skills. The evaluation result of the each applicant will be kept confidential. The
evaluation procedure is strictly impartial, unbiased, and fair. As an Equal Opportunity

(2) List of research activities and accomplishments in reversed chronological order
categorized into: international journal publications, reviewed international
conference papers, domestic journal and conference publications, books, and
others;
(3) Hard copies of three (3) most significant publications;
(4) Summary of main research activities and research plan (up to 1500 words);
(5) List of contributions and activities in academic societies such as editorship for
international/domestic journals and membership of conference program
committees;
(6) List of additional information such as successful grant applications, awards,
patents;
(7) Plans for educational activities (up to 1000 words); and
(8) Two letters of recommendation or the names and contact information (mailing
addresses, e-mail addresses, telephone and fax numbers) of two (2) references.
