Hi gang
Nice thread! :)
Before settling on IRM, the RMS (now IRMS) Exec discussed, googled* (*other search engines are available), discussed some more and kicked it around for literally yonks (a word meaning 'a long time' and not, to the best of my knowledge, an acronym for anything :) ) and, you are right, there are stacks of acronymical uses for both! In the end, we settled on IRM.
The important thing was, we felt, was to get the word 'information' in there because of both changing perceptions of what 'Records Management' means and also to more closely reflect what we are about.
Regards
Meic

I hope this doesn't go too far, I can see us getting in to a "front for the liberation of Palestine" no "Palestine liberation front" (thank you Monty Python) situation.
I have consulted my Regional information Manager and done some Research in Motion using my Remote Interface Module. Unfortunately I have had a problem with Isothermal Remnant Magnetisation and had to take Intermediate Remedial Measures giving me a big headache which needed Immediate Release Morphine. So I think the situation is either will do me.
There is an acronym for every occasion we just don't need to get hung up on them.

Eldin,
IRM also stands for Information Resources Management, as in the Aslib IRM Network (now defunct) formed in 1992. I guess we've lost it now to the latest topics you mention.

Bob

Just an observation....
RIM = Records and Information Management
IRM = Information Risk Management or Information Rights Management
Interesting that the UK Records Management Society propose changing their name to "Information & Records Management Society" rather than "Records & Information Management Society".
Regards,
Eldin.
