Nice one Sallie. Good idea.
There is, though, something in Jacinta's idea. But it might be best handled
not with a bunch of individuals grinding axes. A better bet might be to sell
the idea to a "respected" organisation – ICSU would be an excellent home for
something, if it took on board the sort of comments that have appeared here.
But it also needs input, or at least advice, from the hacks' side. At least
some input on how this motley crew works. Without it, the venture would have
no credibility within the media.
Think of it as something like the Science Media Centre. This uses scientists
and media folks as advisors.
One thing to do is to avoid paying too much attention to the self-appointed
bloggers of science. Many are illiterate beyond belief. (They write crappy
copy that rambles on for ever.) And few have spent a day at the chalkface.
For heaven's sake, they even write their own, usually dire, headlines.

I too have my concerns about making these judgements and the criteria but a
first step would be to see a bit more of hey this piece is great on lists
and other forums rather than the usual hey this is awful....but maybe that's
not human nature! Personally I took an executive decision a few years back
to really try to ensure that I always say when something is great and I tell
you what, it is very satisfying indeed ...

The American equivalent of Behind the Headlines - Health News Review has
a five star rating system for articles, which acknowledges good and bad
reporting.
