medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

From: Genevra Kornbluth <[log in to unmask]>

> Dear Christopher,
> Thank you for your kind words.

my pleasure to thank you for such an interesting, useful and beautiful site.

good luck with it.

> One of the more interesting aspects of Carolingian sigillography is indeed
the usage of head-gear. While many of the seals show laurel wreaths, the
diadem (and eventually crown) is quite clear on the imprints of Louis the
German,

>Carloman of Bavaria,

http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/images/Carloman878.jpg

(that last one looke so peculiar that i first wondered if it could not have
been an ancient seal (of a woman) reused in the 9th century. but, i see now,
in comparing it with that of Arnulf, that it clearly is not a question of
that, but just the peculiarities of the diadem which give it that "look"
--"bun" at the rear and all.)

>Arnulf,

>Zwentibold,

http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/images/Zwentibold896.jpg

that one is a bit hard to read (not the fault of the photograph).

>and Louis the Child.

getting well onto a real crown, apparently.

http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/images/LouisChildAug903.jpg

what an astonishingly Hellenistic bust that is!

i can't really make out the headgear, however.

http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/images/LouisChild905.jpg

*there's* your more recognizable Carolingian fellow.

with that "astral" proto-crown.

http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/images/LouisChild911.jpg

i can see nothing but Golden Locks, there.

>I have photographed the diadems and crowns in detail,

i said "diadems" when i clearly intended "wreaths" --it was those which struck
me as being so "classical" in their origin and intent.

>but unless asked will not be posting such shots until I finish digitizing the
rest of my backlog (if I ever do).

please don't let me deflect you from your Path --more is better, here, and
your site has greatly improved since the last time i visited it a few months
ago.

> Unfortunately, I have not photographed Capetian seals. My archive consists
of images that I shot to support my own research, rather than to survey any
particular field. I extensively studied, and therefore photographed,
Carolingian seals as part of my work on the contemporary engraved gems

yes, i saw some of those previously.

quite magnificent work --and photography of it-- which i first got to know
from your excellent book on the subject

Genevra Alisoun Kornbluth, Engraved gems of the Carolingian empire. University
Park, Pa.: Pennsylvania State University Press, 1995.

which turned me on to a whole medium i had only brushed past.

clearly, the quality of the work there suggests a quite *vast* amount of work
which we have lost, wouldn't you say?

> Since access to each item had to be carefully negotiated with the holding
archive, I did not request later charters that were not directly relevant. Of
course, if anyone would like to commission photos of the Capetian material I'd
be delighted to oblige!

well, if anyone would like to subsidize my commissioning such work, i would be
delighted to oblige!

i've got a few seals at Chartres (not Capetian, as such, but Capetian period)
which i could use some decent images of.

> Incidentally, there are some splendid crowns (combining the diadem with a
covering enclosing the top of the head) with long Byzantine-style pendilia or
earrings on the Ellwangen Casket
> http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/Carolingian3.html

looks like an whole other page i need to look at.

> The link for the Charles the Fat bulla

>works for me.

and, perversely, it has ceased to malfunction for me, as well.

i don't know what the problem might have been --i was doing a "copy link" and
pasting it in and it still wouldn't come up.

>I do appreciate hearing about problems, whether with links, faulty labels, or
whatever.

will be glad to send them on, should i find them.

thanks for a very valuable site.
