..and the latest model, a step down from the Desire, is the Wildfire. I
know this because my wife bought one this week and I want it. Hurrumph.
It's very slick, anyway, and available on pretty cheap contracts

My experience is the same as James': I have an HTC Hero (a.k.a
"T-Mobile G2 Touch") which is brilliant. The HTC Desire is the
next model from the same stable and looks very similar except it
has a faster processor and a considerably higher-res screen.
We have a couple of projects here doing application development on
Android and the feedback from our developers is that the dev
environment (in Eclipse) is good, with good support for loading
apps into the phone and use of the emulator.
When you plug the phone into a PC, it presents as a simple
file-system (like a USB memory stick) - very simple and just what
you want. (You can also use it as a 3G dongle instead when you
plug it into a PC, which - speaking as a train commuter - is
great).
Michael.
