Dear All
On behalf of SSAT/Heinemann, I am delighted to announce the publication of our latest set of teaching materials, ½ø²½Ò», J¨¬n b¨´ 1. I am the Series Editor for the books which have been written by Xiaoming Zhu, Yu Bin, Lisa Wang, Yan Hua, Anne Martin with additional advice from Linying Liu.
J¨¬n b¨´ 1 consists of a Pupil Book, a Teacher¡¯s Guide, an Audio CD Pack and a Student Workbook. It is for KS3 pupils who are just beginning Chinese and is designed for completion in 4-5 terms of ¡®on curriculum¡¯ Chinese lessons, or longer if being used with an after school club.
The key features are that: it is a completely integrated course for Chinese teachers and learners; it has been developed by a hugely experienced team; it is packed with cultural content, giving context to language learning; it has a strong focus on character acquisition and differentiated activities. There is comprehensive coverage of all five strands of the KS3 Framework for Languages. The vocabulary and grammar introduced have been mapped against Asset Breakthrough grammar and wordlists too.
Each of the book¡¯s five chapters has four core units, a culture spread, an investigating characters spread, along with extension, review, test, key language and stroke order pages. Everything is there for pupil and for teacher; grammar is integrated and clearly explained throughout and there are extra grammar pages and reading and writing exercises at the back. The aim has been, all along, to let teachers concentrate on creative teaching without having to worry about putting all the material together themselves.
(A feature of the Pupil Book is the emphasis on learning to read characters without relying on pinyin. In the Pupil Book, pinyin is printed next to each new character introduced and is broken down into syllables, rather than grouped into words. This is done on purpose to encourage learners to see pinyin merely as a pronunciation system, rather than almost ¨C as is often the case ¨C an alternative romanized language. Once the pupil is familiar with the sound, the pinyin is then removed for reading activities. Pupils find characters interesting and exciting and enjoy the challenge of reading without pinyin. )
