The Burlington Magazine Online Index includes the entire editorial contents
and illustrations of The Burlington Magazine dating from March 1903. The
Index is currently online up to December 1977, work on more recent years is
in progress. The Index will be updated monthly.
JSTOR <http://www.jstor.org/> subscribers can then view articles and
illustrations online. Non-JSTOR <http://www.jstor.org/> subscribers can
still search articles and illustrations of the Burlington Magazine through
the Online Index and purchase single articles if needed.
What are the advantages in using the Burlington Index as opposed to JSTOR?
* Indexing is done by using controlled terms resulting in a consistent
coverage of names and concepts that are expressed in many different ways in
the literature
* Indexing is done according to well-defined guidelines resulting in a
highly consistent product
* Subject indexing within the Online Index interface allows users to refine
searches greatly
* Illustrations are fully indexed and searcheable according to artist, media
and free-text caption search
* It is possible to browse a complete census of Burlington contributors and
browse a critical census of Museums, Private Galleries, Buildings, Artists,
Collectors and Patrons. This allows the user to gauge the depth of the
indexing and makes the structure of the system transparent.
The Online Index has been supported by a grant from The Scholarly
Communications Program of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
