People might want to have a look at some of the stuff that has been going on here
http://www.cilip.org.uk/get-involved/advocacy/Pages/overviewofadvocacy.aspx
There was a clear desire for more advocacy work expressed in the recent Defining our professional future work (involving members and non members).
The current work is something to build on. http://twitter.com/ukpling is worth a follow.

I've been involved in CILIP for a very long time and I think this type of comment undermines the tremendous work both staff and trustees of CILIP do on a daily basis. Bob McKee was very keen on advocacy and developed this as a thread of CILIP's work over a number of years. I know how pressured CILIP staff are, especially as they received a significant cut in staffing numbers in the last couple of years. Also CILIP is without a Chief executive at the present time and as such it cannot be easy for them to deal with the huge demands made on their time.
CILIP is us -its members not just staff - and we have been making a lot of noise locally and nationally. If you think CILIP isn't doing enough - get involved.

I totally agree with Steve, CILIP have done virtually nothing to defend the profession or fight the cuts, their silence has been deafening. In fact the profession is only starting to wake up to the reality, probably far too little too late? I'm glad that someone got a job after being made redundant but i don't really see how it adds to the very serious debate that is gong on?

I just can't understand why an organisation which is one small step away from losing the vast bulk of it's income when we all stop paying our subs cos we're all on the dole doesn't make more noise in the 'real' world.
Librarians and Info workers KNOW all this stuff - we know we are doing innovative and vital work which contributes an incalculable amount towards the well-being of every community in which we work, but I want to see CILIP on the National news saying these things.
Blogs are all very well but they are basically read by the already-converted, what we need is action, reps on every single discussion and debate and not just the usual rent-a-quote people.

I have to say that while I found Toni's approach to her redundancy admirable, ultimately in my service we found the article a bit depressing - probably just us (we are renowned cynics and curmudgeons... bit like Lou Reed but that's a different story).
We weren't that heartened by the fact that there may be a minimum wage waitressing job out there for us should we lose ours and there was 100% consensus on what we wouldn't spend our redundancy money on - i.e. CILIP subs and chartering.
It's a sensitive topic at the moment as we all have the axe suspended above our heads and what will work for one individual will not for another. But, as I say, it made us all a bit depressed here.

Hello Steve
Yes, I agree, in a way, but the People items are often in this vein, people writing about an aspect of their job, or career, because people like to read about how others are getting on (or not) in the profession that they are in. I hope they do, anyway.
There has been plenty of discussion recently about talking in the 'echo chamber' which is why the website 'Voices for the Library' has been set up and I wish it every success.

Hi Debby
Toni is obviously a very 'together' person and her attitude to her redundancy is indeed admirable.
The Gazette though [by definition] is preaching to the converted, these things need to be 'out there' - and into the conciousness of everyone.

Hello Steve
I welcome very much your comment on the Gazette article; I really enjoy getting feedback.
I can't speak for CILIP, but I published the article because Toni is someone who I feel talks and writes very intelligently - and, importantly, entertainingly - about the situations she finds herself in.
The section is called 'People' and it is about the situations they find themselves in in their careers.
Elsewhere in Gazette (and in more depth in Update) coverage is given to the job situation, and the implication of cuts, with information about what CILIP is doing and can do to offer assistance.
In the next issue I've got an excellent summary of the situation re volunteering in public libraries.
I'd welcome further comments about this article (or any article in Gazette); and letters for publication.
(Other readers have found the article energising, reassuring, vivid, inspiring, 'unfortunately relevant'.)

I've just got round to reading the latest Gazette [2nd-15th Sept] and am still pinching myself about the 'My Career' column....
Did I dream this?
While I cannot fault for one second the positive attitude of Toni Franck to her redundancy, what did CILIP think they were going to achieve by printing this article?
Are we supposed to take something positive from it?
Are CILIP going to be printing all the stories of the hundreds of displaced Librarians once the ConDem government makes huge swathes of us redundant and we're all scrabbling around for non-existent jobs??
A little more sensitivity and alot more shouting for our cause might redress the balance of this hopeless misfire.
