Delegate comments
'Really good round up of editorial management. Useful up-to-date industry changes
covered.' Fiona Shipperlee, SAGE

'Very interesting to see things from alternative perspectives' Louisa Strain, Society
for the Study of Addiction

'As an editorial assistant, this course has given me an excellent insight into
management issues.' Eleanor Maddox, The Institute of Engineering & Technology

'The course gave some really good tips for developing journals.' Rhonda Lane, Springer

'The course was pitched exactly right and served to affirm much of what I currently do
whilst providing great suggestions for improvement and development. A very useful
booklet with additional material for reference and further reading. A resource that
will sit on my desk! A great venue and extremely nice refreshments. This was a
particularly useful course to discuss and realise how different publishes are
developing their journals in the current climate of online development etc.' Rosie
Sheridan, Maney Publishing

'Found it extremely useful and very interesting. It addressed many queries that I
had. I think the course was run well and in sufficient detail. To add more would
mean the need to extend the length of the course.' Lara Finan, IOP Publishing

'Really comprehensive course material - lots to read over afterwards - very useful.'
E. Browne, PLoS

'Very useful and informative, excellent atmosphere and discussion.' S. Scoffield,
Society of Chemical Industry

Overview:
This course introduces the common issues and tasks encountered in journal management.
Considering various approaches to effective journal management and relationship
building, it enables delegates to build on their skills to be more effective in
meeting the day-to-day challenges of journal publishing, changing business models and
editorial processes. The emphasis is on practical advice and guidance, and
participants will be able to apply and integrate ideas and suggestions to help improve
their own journals. The course is also an excellent opportunity for journal publishing
managers at non-profit society publishers and commercial publishers to meet and
exchange experiences.

Programme:

*	What is effective editorial management?
*	Journal development and quality improvement
*	Relationships with key stakeholders in journals publishing
*	Influencing skills and change management
*	Key business issues affecting managing editors and publishers

Learning objectives - by the end of the course delegates will:
Understand stakeholders' needs and consider ways to establish effective relationships;
have an overview of techniques to manage and improve their journals; have gained
advice on how to positively influence stakeholders and implement change; have a brief
overview of the essentials of the publishing business and how they affect editorial
processes and management, such as contracts, copyright and finances; have discussed
experiences and shared ideas with their peers.

Who should attend:
This course is aimed at junior managing editors/equivalent editorial personnel, with
1-2 years' experience. Staff newly appointed to these positions will also benefit
provided they have some previous experience of publishing. It is not suitable for more
experienced managing editors or publishers with broader managerial responsibility. As
the editorial role differs between organizations, a questionnaire will be circulated
to attendees prior to the course in order to establish the areas of the programme that
are the most relevant to delegates' work.
