A reminder to about these two seminars on topics very pertinent to both teaching information fluency and maintaining and developing the kudos of the library:

CILIP's International Library & Information Group (ILIG) is proud to
present two half day seminars:

Plagiarism - Stopping it before it Begins (9.00 - 12.30)

and

Transliteracy and Web 2.0 (13.15-16.45)

Friday 22nd October

CILIP, Ridgmount St, London WC1E 7AE.

Concise and value-for-money opportunities to update yourself on areas
of key relevance to information professionals. ILIG has recently been
awarded CILIP's Seal of Recognition acknowledging high standards in the
content and relevance of CPD training and development activities.

Seminar One: 9.00 - 12.30 (registration 9.00)

Plagiarism - Stopping it before it Begins

In the e-environment, copying is easier than ever and the Ctrl-C,
Ctrl-V keystrokes are readily available. This seminar examines ways in
which librarians can help pupils and students understand the
implications of what they are doing and reasons why copying and pasting
does not help them learn.

At the end of the session attendees will:

· Be able to develop strategies for explaining plagiarism to
students

· Have reviewed examples of ways in which schools and colleges
are tackling plagiarism

· Understand what students can and cannot do

· Understand how to support international students in these issues

Course leaders

Anne-Marie Tarter is School Librarian of the Year 2006 and formerly
librarian for Ripon Grammar School

Marianne Bradnock is on the Board of the SLA, and co-editor of its new
guideline on plagiarism

Nazlin Bhimani is Academic Support Liaison Manager for the School of
Engineering & Information Sciences & The Institute for Work Based
Learning at Middlesex University

Seminar Two: 13.15-16.45

Transliteracy and Web 2.0

Transliteracy, according to wikipedia, is the ability to read, write
and interact across a range of platforms, tools and media from signing
and orality through handwriting, print, TV, radio and film, to digital
social networks - but what does this mean for librarians who want to
teach information literacy?

At the end of the session attendees will:

* Have developed an understanding of the wide range of literacies
needed by pupils and students to access different types of information
* Understand the uses of some of the latest Web 2.0 tools such as
voicethreads, QR codes and stickybits
* Recognise how these tools can be used to enhance information
literacy skills in pupils and students

Course Leader

Phil Bradley is well known as a guru in all things web-related. Here
he turns his expertise to new Web 2.0 gizmos and assesses their value,
and considers issues around Transliteracy and Web 2.0
