I can recall this order of activity.
Norwich was definitely the first public library with RFID in the UK,
Colchester second in 2003 and Barbican Library third in 2004. I remember
this because I visited the other two libraries prior to the Barbican
going live, which is still very much alive I'm pleased to say despite
the reference to it falling into "disuse"! We recently added chip and
pin payment facilities with a SmartServe machine in our Music Library.
I'm not clear about the dates when academic libraries went live -
Nottingham Trent were an early adopter around 2003 and prior to that
there was an Oxford College which had an RFID installation supplied by
3M.

Thanks Mike
Yes, see you tomorrow - looks like being a good turnout at the
interoperability meeting!
Norwich in 2001 has 3 votes so far. Anyone bid lower?

It wasn't us nbut we weren't far behind. If memory serves we believed at
the time that a library housed at the Barbican had fallen into disuse.
Also Norwich were early adopters of a pre-ISO system. Hope this helps.
See you tomorrow?

Subject: A simple question?
Dear all
I'm writing my presentation for this year's RFID Symposium in Wildau in
and wanted to include a brief historical note on the development of the
UK library RFID market. I'm trying to establish which was the first UK
library to deploy an RFID solution of any type - and when that was?
Anyone have any answers/suggestions?
Thanks a lot
Mick
