German Art Works on Show on Monday, 20 September, 11:30-19:00, in the Hatton Gallery*
As "Begleitprogramm" for the Sommerfest of the German Embassy on Monday at Newcastle University, the German Section of the School of Modern Languages in conjunction with the University's Hatton Gallery has organised a one-day show of artworks related to Germany for coming Monday, 20 September, from 11:30 onwards. The Hatton has a large print-collection, ranging from Burgkmair's "Triumphzug Kaiser Maximilians" to contemporary German etchings and woodcuts. Grouped round the permanently installed "Merzbarn" by Kurt Schwitters, there will be his portrait of Fred Uhlman, and collages based on Schwitters' by our students, product of two workshops with our writer in residence, Angelika Overath. Finally, there will be the watercolours by Thomas Hair on display that show coal-mining in the North East in the 19th century, at a time when Newcastle miners sank the first shafts in the Ruhrgebiet - where the watercolours were recently exhibited ("Im Land der Kohlegruben").
The Gallery is open from 11:30; I will do a tour round the exhibits at 16:00; there is a reception from 17:00-19:00 organised by the City Council to celebrate German Culture and its connection with the North East; participation in this would still be possible - if you want to come along, send me an email so that we know numbers.
* The Hatton Gallery is part of the Great North Museum, situated in the Quadrangle of Newcastle University, next to the Arches.
