*Field Research Position on Xenophobia and Social Cohesion*
The FMSP is looking to hire an experienced and committed researcher for
ongoing work on xenophobic violence and social cohesion in South Africa.
Based at Wits University in Johannesburg, the position will require
extensive travel within the country. Responsibilities will include field
research comprised of individual interviews and focus group facilitation
in informal settlements and townships; providing detailed written
documentation of the research findings; and contributing to research
analysis and publications. The candidate will be expected to work both
independently and as part of a research team.
Qualifications & Experience:
Experience in conducting field research in informal settlements and
townships, with expertise in the use of qualitative research
methodologies (structured and semi-structured interviewing, focus
groups, key informant interviews, etc.). Fluency in English is required,
as is fluency in at least two other primary South African languages
(e.g., isiZulu, seSotho, seTswana, isiXhosa, Afrikaans). A Bachelors,
Masters or higher degree in a relevant field is an advantage, but
practical field work experience is more important.
The position will initially be full time for six months. This post may
be extended based on performance and the availability of funds. The
position is available immediately and candidates are expected to start
as soon possible.
