CALL FOR EVIDENCE on Public Attitudes to Low-Carbon Energy - Evidence Review
Research Synthesis for Research Councils UK Energy Programme
This evidence review is being undertaken by a team of researchers from
Cardiff University (led by Lorraine Whitmarsh), Tyndall Centre
Manchester (led by Paul Upham), and Exeter University (Patrick
Devine-Wright), with external input from Andrew Darnton. The review is
commissioned by the Research Councils UKs Energy Programme.
The evidence review will identify what the current academic literature
and government, third sector and business reports and polls reveal
about public perceptions and attitudes to low-carbon energy. The
review should cover diverse areas of policy and behaviour, spanning
energy production and consumption, and including:
Energy efficiency and conservation, bioenergy and biofuels, fossil
fuels, carbon capture and storage, energy storage, nuclear fusion and
fission, nuclear waste, hydrogen and fuel cells, tidal and wave,
solar, wind, geothermal, microgeneration and district heating, energy
networks, energy systems and scenarios, and energy research.
The synthesis will also provide an analysis of factors influencing
public attitudes to low-carbon energy, and variations by different
attitudinal groups (e.g., cultural, social and economic groups).
Lastly, the synthesis will highlight the impact of specific public
engagement initiatives relating to low carbon energy policies and
practices.
Ultimately, the review is designed to support RCUK (including the
EPSRC), in the development of public engagement strategies around
critical societal issues. The strategy will serve numerous functions
including helping to establish what research should be commissioned in
future, and how best RCUK can contribute to enhancing public
engagement with expert thinking in the area of energy and climate
change. The findings from the synthesis will be widely circulated; we
hope you will be able to contribute to this process.
Methodology
A systematic search of bibliographic databases and a formal call for
evidence to practitioners as well as academics is being made in order
to identify both academic and non-academic sources and
elicit views about gaps in current knowledge. We would be grateful for
any sources or references you would like to nominate for this review.
Sources should be recent, and cover public perceptions, or engagement
activities, on any of the low-carbon energy topics listed above.
Please note that this review builds on the Research Synthesis on
Attitudes to Environmental Change conducted in 2009 for the Living
with Environmental Change (LWEC) Programme. If you submitted reports,
data or references on attitudes to low-carbon energy to that
synthesis, you do not need to resubmit them for the current call for
evidence.
Call for Evidence & Further Information
