apologies for crossposting...just spreading the word!
Greetings,
The DC-SAM community meeting will be held on Thursday, October 21, 4-5:30 PM,
at the DC 2010 conference in Pittsburgh, PA.
The SAM meeting is open to all -- members, newcomers, and those who are just
curious.
Community co-leaders (Stu Weibel and I) will oversee an introduction; three
confirmed presenters will address important topics--and allow for discussion +
Q&A; and there will be an open discussion targeting SAM issues and activities.
Presenters/topics listed here:
~ Todd Carpenter, Managing Director, National Information Standards
Organization (NISO)
Title: NISO/National Federation of Advanced Information Services (NFAIS)
Supplemental Journal Article Materials
Brief abstract: This presentation will first introduce NISO. Background and
outcomes of NISO led work in this area will be presented. Insights and
questions will be offered to stimulate discussion on how this work relates to
metadata for scientific data and opportunities promoting interchange and
connecting with data repositories and other initiatives. [draft abstract]
~ Joan Starr, Manager, Strategic and Project Planning, California Digital
Library
Topic: DataCite and the DataCite Metadata Kernel
Brief abstract: DataCite is an international consortium that offers an easy
way to connect an article published in a scholarly journal with the underlying
data. The DataCite Metadata Kernel aims to support the larger goals of DataCite
by recommending a standard citation format for datasets; providing the basis
for interoperability with other data management schemas; promoting dataset
discovery, and laying the groundwork for future services. This presentation
will introduce DataCite and give an overview of the DataCite Metadata Kernel.
~ Jian Qin, Associate Professor, School of Information Studies, Syracuse
University
Topic: E-Science, Data, and Metadata: Linking Research to Teaching
Brief abstract: This presentation reports the experience and issues from a
linked data research project and what implications this project and our
previous scientific data literacy project have on science metadata research and
teaching.
~ Open discussion
