I think Erica makes some really important points
Firstly, I have to say that I do recognize in myself (with the usual
discomfort and without wishing to become too internalizing and
individualising) her description of sluggishness, a lack of imagination
and a tendency to self-indulgence in not contributing more to collective
action. I had planned to go to both meetings on the 8th but have been
waylaid by work commitments.
This makes me more respectful than ever of the achievements of the group
who have worked for some time to deliver the section.
Secondly, there does appear to have been a very constructive response to
the establishment of the section, ie the increased urgency to organize
the collective.
The structure which has been set up around the development of the
section has also provided the opportunity to set up the first meeting to
organize the collective, ie its going to happen at the BPS headquarters,
in the same room as the section meeting, in the morning.
You could almost see the dialectic in action:
Thesis: community psychology reaches another significant point in its
development in the UK in the form of a BPS section.
Antithesis: members of the community psychology network respond by
raising concerns about the ability of the section to be truly cp in
nature. UKCP network members propose the establishment of a cp
collective with "higher order powers", which will begin by inserting
itself into the structure provided by the BPS.
Synthesis: the emergence of two groups with overlapping memberships and
aims which will probably coexist with a greater or lesser degree of
mutual tension. Separated, or maybe joined, by a bring and share picnic.

Dear Erica,
So true! Was just watching and waiting for it to happen, been there many
times, the BPS closed down the International Committee (I was a member)
a few years ago - no reason was given, probably politically
uncomfortable for them...
With empathy,
Greta

Dear All,
It is so painful to watch angels dancing on a pin. I note that it
took the move to form a BPS Section
for Community Psychology, for the plan to emerge to set up a
collective, and then you complain about the restraints of the BPS.
Why don't you all wake up, and realise that YOU have been sluggish
and unimaginative and self-indulgent in not acting together, rather
than complaining about being excluded. It beggars imagination, really.
Erica
