Surely the issue is that a theatre, book or restaurant critic is
criticising a product which the public consumes. Where as science
communicator is already one step away from the science, which is itself a
few steps away from a consumer product.
Wouldn't a science communication critic essentially be a critic of critics
which all gets a bit meta for mass appeal.
