If the reel with the buzzer was located some distance away from the borehole you would still hear the sound and could read the depth at the well head. You could confirm the safety of the atmosphere around the reel by using your gas meter. Any gas coming out of the borehoe will disperse rather rapidly in the atmosphere, unless the gas is coming out so fast your very presence adjacent would be called into question.
