I think he's talking about the situation in the US, where academic approaches to poetry and creative writing are more "professionalised" than here.

Yup, as far as it goes, but again, it's setting up a simple beast, 'academy', when the reality is more insiduous. Have these guys never read a Russian novel?! Really it's hard to talk about this stuff without biting on a mouthful of mud. The armies of people who turn out lookalike magazine poems or performance poets who think it's the real thing to imitate John Hegley's vocal mannerisms or the dead heart within the 'style poem' etc etc. It exists. Avoid it. Write.
