VARBRUL (GoldVarb) does only a few very specific types of analyses,
and even those rather badly, as I see it. Still, some consider it a
"gold standard", even a kind of constitutive ritual for
sociolinguists. A program I wrote called Rbrul is something of a
compromise. Instat sounds cool, thought I haven't used it - but it's
worth saying that R isn't really that hard to use for simpler things.
