Joint meeting of YSS and RSS Centre for Statistical Education
University of Plymouth
The RSS Centre for Statistical Education (CSE) is starting a pilot programme for the new RSS CSE Stats Club with YSS. The aim is to encourage schools to set up workshops called 'RSS CSE Stats Club' once a week or fortnight during lunch times or after school. Each school can structure their workshop as they like but are supported by the RSS CSE who provide work material and a website for those part of the club.
This meeting seeks to promote the new RSS CSE Statistics Club and to present the wide range of career prospects available to those who study statistics. The event is aimed at GCSE and A Level students and their teachers.
The morning will consist of statistical career talks and a workshop for the students will take place after lunch. Talks cover a wide range of topics, including
- Academia; "Statistics for science" (Dr Stan Yip University of Exeter)
- Government; "Statistician or analyst? A life in the day of an Assistant Statistician" (Dr Daryl Lloyd, Department for Transport. Government Statistical Service)
- Academia; "There's no theorem like Bayes Theorem" (Dr. Paul Hewson, University of Plyamouth)
- Industry; "A year in the life of a statistician" (Tim J. Wyatt, GlaxoSmithKline)
- Medical; "Piecing together an epidemiological puzzle" (Ross Harris, Health Protection Agency)
- Finance; "Statistics at the Bank of England" (Eleanor Broughton, Bank of England)
