Research in Transportation Business
and Management
We are delighted to announce the launch of a new interdisciplinary journal for 2011, Research in
Transportation Business and Management (RTBM). The journal will published themed volumes,
looking at management policy issues in relation to passenger and freight transportation in both the
industrialized and non‐industrialized areas of the world.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Accessibility in passenger transport: policy and management
Volume Editor: Professor Corinne Mulley, The University of Sydney, Australia
Accessibility in the passenger transport industry can refer to both
• the ‘ease’ of reaching destinations, measured in time distance or generalised cost, both in the
transport planning context of designing public transport routes or networks and in the
discussion of social inclusion
• the physical access of passengers to passenger transport, often in relation to meeting the
needs of passengers with disabilities;
This special issue seeks papers addressing both these areas, focussing on challenges in strategic
formulation or implementation. We are keen to receive proposals that combine and integrate
theories and concepts that are taken from or can be traced to origins in different disciplines or lessons
learned from different modes and approaches.
Papers on policy and management in relation to the following topics would be especially welcome:
• Passenger choice of access mode to transport interchange and hubs (eg access to railway
stations, airports);
• The challenges of accessibility planning including measurement, identifying and ameliorating
transport disadvantage, decision support tools for policy use, the role of public participation;
• Innovative approaches to improving public transport accessibility in low density areas;
• Behavioural change management (to take advantage of existing accessibility);
• The impact of network planning design on accessibility;
• A cross‐national analysis of the timing and impact of disability legislation in developing better
physical access to different modes;
• The role of universal design in the provision of more accessible modes of transport.
Abstracts (250 words maximum) should be submitted to Professor Corinne Mulley at
[log in to unmask] no later than August 16th 2010.
Accepted abstracts will be notified by 20 August 2010 with a submission deadline for full papers by
January 7th 2011.
