Sports medicine for the younger athletes provides a number of challenges
to the sports medicine clinician. These are appropriate management of
muscles and skeleton conditions, assessment and advice regarding the risks
and benefits of exercise in children with chronic illness and the question
of how much sport is too much.
Others are pieces of advice regarding the nutritional needs of the growing
child and encouragement of appropriate behaviour of parents and coaches.
Concerning the management of conditions of muscles and skeletons, it is
important to note that younger athletes suffer the same injuries as their
adult counterparts.
However, there are significant differences in the type of injuries
sustained by children and adolescents due to differences in the structure
of the growing bone compared to the adult bone.
Growing Bone
Anatomical differences exist between a growing bone and adult bone.
The joint space cartilage of a growing bone is a thicker layer than in
adult bone and can remodel, and the immediate junction between the joints
is vulnerable to disruption, especially from tearing forces.
