Subject: Video clips describe added value of collaborative environments for researchers and Enhanced Publications
SURFfoundation<http://www.surffoundation.nl/en/Pages/default.aspx> has made several short video clips about the experiences of researchers in several innovative SURFshare<http://www.surffoundation.nl/en/themas/openonderzoek/Pages/default.aspx> project on Collaboratories and Enhanced Publications. On both subjects a promotional video of 5 minutes has been made. Although the video’s are spoken in Dutch, the two promotion video’s are now available with English subtitles on YouTube<http://www.youtube.com/user/StichtingSURF>.
Collaboratories<http://www.surffoundation.nl/en/actueel/Pages/Filmsshowaddedvalueofcollaborativeenvironmentsforresearchers.aspx>
New advances in ICT are making it possible for researchers to collaborate virtually in many different ways. The new tools help researchers collect and organise research data, share sources, and describe and publish research results. In the video’s, researchers and support staff describe what it is like to set up and work with a collaboratory.
The researchers discovered that collaboratories are particularly useful for storing and sharing information. Online collaborative environments can also be handy when combined with online public information. One of the collaboratories was set up to forward certain information from the restricted-access environment to an existing public website.

Enhanced Publications<http://www.surffoundation.nl/en/actueel/Pages/ShortinformationfilmsaboutEnhancedPublications.aspx>
An Enhanced Publication consists of a publication, usually a text, enhanced with extra materials. The publication may be an article in a journal, a dissertation, a report, a memorandum or a chapter in a book. Such publications can be enhanced by adding or linking them to research data, illustrations, videos, audio files, visualisations, metadatasets and post-publication data such as commentary or rankings.
Working with Enhanced Publications led the researchers to discover that adding background materials to publications allowed other researchers to review and repeat the research more easily. Enhanced Publications also proved to be useful in teaching. Students, for example, can repeat the research described in a publication and learn to analyse using the research data underlying the conclusions given in the publication. Enhanced Publications can also be a valuable tool for the general public. By linking policy documents to publications and the research data on which they are based, for example, the relevance of the research to society is made clear.
