Extending the discussion from Peter Kurilecz's post (which mailserve is refusing to display in this send message window!):
Agree that current year is a weak concept for a trigger point, but is End of Year is a valid trigger point. It should be definable as a date (31 March for End Financial Year in most large UK enterprises) and even to time (23:59 or 00.01 hr would seem sensible options)
I have routinely written retention schedules with trigger of End Current Year and not had any adverse feedback from users. The only challenge is making it clear which Year applies - parts of our organsiation focus on Teaching Year (ends 31 July), others Financial Year (ends 31 March) and still others on Calendar Year (ends 31 December).
I would suggest that Jayne's question about cemeteries and crematoria would focus on Calendar year as I beleive parish registers are so divided. However, I am sure the List will include members of different faiths for whom Year End (day preceding New Year) will mean different dates. Make sure that the schedule is explicit about both Trigger and Duration! Then our users should not go wrong :)
I'll leave any discussion of date formats (day first or month first) and time zones to Peter!
Best wishes
