I have now read this review but not Purcell's book. Apparently Peter Lewis
had a super mum the memories of whom could be questioned this far removed in
time. Strange that Purcell chose Nella Last as a subject as many of us know
her writing so well, but the other two are an interesting contrast. Poor
Helen Mitchell suffered housewife's neurosis, (something the Daily Mail may
not know about!) and the fact that she attributes night disturbances
incorrectly may well be a symptom of her mental state.
Lewis does not like Alice Bridges either, as she "enjoyed exercising her
power over men - but didn't love them" Sensible woman, she was married and
there was a war on!
Lewis's final comment seems to be a poor attempt at humour, perhaps to
lessen the discomfort that he feels for these women?

Dear fellow Jiscmailers,
Please see attached link to Daily Mail review by Peter Lewis of Jen
Purcell's new book:
DOMESTIC SOLDIERS: SIX WOMEN'S LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR BY JENNIFER
PURCELL (Constable £12.99)
www.dailymail.co.uk/home/books/article-1303571
Without wishing to influence you (and I haven't read Jen's book myself) I
thought this was rather a poor review with a snide last sentence. But it
might attract readers all the same.
What does everyone think?
Dorothy (Sheridan)
