Well he certainly didn't reply to my request last week - nor did the list owners. There was a short pause, then service was resumed as 'normal'.
My subsequent suggestion was that everyone who doesn't want his messages should send them back to him directly: maybe, just maybe, he might then take notice.
Glad I didn't get any form of hate mail afterwards, though - just a lot of support, and two people saying they found his messages useful.

I think that Gerry gets his jiscmail emails as daily digests , so he
won't be able to reply to these until he receives this, and it being
August, it is possible that the list administrator(s) as not picking up
mail on the list quite so quickly as they might at other times of the
year. Perhaps we shouldn't read too much into the lack of rapid
responses form either party! I think John's suggestion of waiting a
week is a good one.

I'm wondering if this is what happens when someone embraces web2.0 a
little too vigorously.
Perhaps his manager at some point said "You really should use some
modern tech - a blog/twitter/etc."..?
(I realise that the end of that sentence may look a little McKiernesque
- at least 5 characters with no apparent use/meaning ;o)
+1 vote for a top level ban - if he doesn't reply to any of our messages
within the week.

If I was Gerry's manager, I would be asking questions about the amount
of time he has to compose such a large number of emails.

Can he just be deleted and banned from the list - this would save us all
having to delete his emails and all the emails saying that he is doing
us all a disservice by feeding us all with such mindless stuff

I wasn't suggesting that Gerry isn't a problem, only that, to the list
owners, he may not yet appear to be a big enough one for them to take
action. I think a statement from them might be helpful?
I doubt Gerry has blocked himself, he is clearly too busy writing to
have time to read anyone else's posts.

I think setting up a Gerry list is a really good idea- those who want it
can get it, everyone else has less to wade through/delete. Another
reason why the complaints seem to be just a drop in the ocean is
probably because most people don't want to kick up a fuss, or be seen to
be complaining about something that others may appreciate- I know I felt
slightly embarrassed replying to all before I realised my concerns were
shared by so many others!
Gerry's lack of response to this discussion almost seems to suggest that
he has blocked replies from the list himself!

The number of complaints is probably "just a drop in the ocean" because
I, and many other people I know, have set up filters to delete Gerry's
messages automatically. Thus a large proportion of the list never see
his postings.
But filters might not be an option for those using web-based interfaces
and certainly won't work for people receiving the digest. Gerry posts
his messages to at least a dozen lists regardless of whether or not they
are relevant. I believe that he has been blocked/banned from at least
two jiscmail lists and I know he was blocked from one of my non-jiscmail
lists way back in 2003 for his spamming of that list.
