I was just re-reading the EH statement and they do state fairly clearly
that this is being done for the practical reason that points, polygons
and lines are stored as separate datasets and they'd like all their
records in one.
"Currently the various types of designation are spatially depicted by a
mixture of points, polygons and multi-part polygons. Each is stored as a
separate dataset in the current Geographical Information System (GIS).
To ease software development and future maintenance the decision has
been taken to move all these depictions to a single dataset in the new
system."
That just leaves the question of why squares and not circles, triangles
or anything else...

Subject: Re: EH : Statement on Spatial Depictions of Heritage Assets ,
especially in respect of the polygonisation of Listed Buildings
I'm joining the ranks of the sceptics on this one. How is converting
things to tiny polygons going to be helpful? Unless, as Chris comments,
it might make dealing with the data easier once it's been moved into a
new GIS.
If my understanding is correct, it's not even as if the polygons would
follow the orientation of the building (assuming they are going to be
automatically generated). The part of me that likes my GIS layers to be
as tidy and uncluttered as possible is quietly crying...
